Noise - bad starter clutch components - common problem with Viragos.
Oil leak - clean the engine with "Gunk Engine degreaser" - sprinkle some white baby powder in the area of the suspected leak and run the bike - the baby powder will discolor at the site of the leak.
Check oil level - below the oil fill cap is the "oil level sight glass"
Start and run the bike for a few minutes to circulate the oil throughout the engine
Turn off the engine and let it sit for a few minutes to allow the oil to drain down to the crankcase.
Check the oil level with the bike straight up and down (as if you were sitting on it).
The oil level should cover 3/4 of the oil level sight glass.
Use quality, brand name, 4 stroke motor oil - 10w40 in cold weather, or 20w50 in warm weather.
