Richard M. Johnson was the 9th vice president and currently the only one ever elected by the US Senate under the provisions of the 12th amendment after he failed to receive the necessary electoral votes. The Virginia delegation ("Faithless electors") supposedly refused to vote for Johnson mainly because his deceased common law wife, Julia Chinn, was a former slave and considered to be a Negro. In the election of 1840 Johnson was not endorsed by the Democrats and Martin Van Buren ran without a running mate. He ultimately lost the election to Wm Henry Harrison.

In 1974, Gerald Ford was the ninth Vice President to be promoted to the Presidency mid-term to fill a presidential vacancy. The first eight times, the vacancy was due to the death of the President. The ninth time (and to date last time), it was the resignation of the President.

Several Vice Presidents were elected President in the usual way after running for President and winning. The ninth of all 14 Vice Presidents who became President was Calvin Coolidge in 1923.
