"D-day" is a military term used to designate the start of an operation.

The most famous/notable D-Day was June 6, 1944 when the Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France. This is known as Operation Overlord.

D-day was the plan created at the Allies meeting in Casablanca with Winston Churchill, Josef Stalin, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Josef Stalin decreed that his forces on the Eastern front were suffering high casualties and that Hitler's troops had to be concentrated on another front. The Allies on the Western front agreed. So they decided to invade France. The Germans knew the Allies would attack France sooner or later, but they didn't know when or where. The Allies fooled them into believing the main assault would take place in Pas de Calais, but it was actually going to take place in Normandy. The invasion was a complete success with its pratroopers, tanks, infantry, planes, and the antire Allied arssenal, though they suffered many casualties. A new front was opened in the west and Hitler concentrated his troopes there and was squezzed in tight in Berlin. Hitler's "Fortress Europe" was liberated and countries under Hitler's fist were freed.

To the best of my knowledge there was no "Operation D-Day". D-Day is a military term used to allow planning when a specific date is not yet known (or is secret). Thus, it's possible to specify plans such that a given thing must take place by D-3 (three days before) or that a particular objective should be achieved by D+5 (five days after), even though the date is unspecified.

The Allied assault on the beaches of Normandy and the Allied invasion of northwestern Europe, which used the term D-Day in their planning and began on the same day, were such huge undertakings (and relatively recent ones) that the term "D-Day" in common parlance has come to refer specifically to June 6, 1944. However, the actual code names of the operations were Neptune and Overlord respectively.

(For Neptune and Overlord, using the term D-Day in the plans proved to be a good idea. The landings were actually tentatively scheduled for June 5th, but on June 4 it became clear that sea conditions were and would likely remain unsuitable for the massive transport required, so it was rescheduled for the 6th instead. If the plans had used actual dates, then they would have all had to be revised.)
