Acceptive, in fact they were beggars living on Native American charity and knowledge of the local agronomy for survival. Within 50 years their encroachment led to hostility on both sides which forced the westward Exodus of Native Americans against the superior weaponry and technology of the Europeans.
The English settlers and explorers seem to have viewed the Powhatan natives as innocent, simple people. Captain John Smith wrote a book entitled "The Generall Historie of Virginia, New-England, and the Summer Isles" which frankly describes the natives as "backward, barbaric and dangerous". This effectively set the tone for all dealings with North American natives from that time onwards.

The Relationship Between the Settlers at Jamestown and the PowhatansJohn Smith was captured and he was going to be killed, but the native princess, Pocahontas, save him. After a while, John Rolfe, the new leader, married Pocahontas and grew crops. Growing more crops mean clearing more land. Then, the natives got irritated because there land for hunting and growing were owned by other people so they had a fight with the English. King Philip, sachem of the Wampanoags of southern Massachusetts in 1675, led a loose confederation of natives in an effort to drive the English colonists out of New England and reclaim their land. Even though the natives by that year were outnumbered by the colonists more than two to one, the Indians succeeded in attacking 45 English villages, completely destroying thirteen including 12,000 homes. The English, indeed, had reason to fear that they would be driven from the land. The colonists were plagued with bad leadership and they made many blunders, allowing the natives at first to gain the upper hand with their effective guerrilla tactics. Eventually, the English adopted the same tactics and by using friendly natives to guide them, gained the upper hand by late spring of 1676. Of about 18,000 natives in the area at the beginning of the war, only 4000 remained at the end.

If you want the original natives that lived in Virginia prior to the Jamestown settlement, it was the "Powhatan" tribe, named after their chief Powhatan. These natives were part of the Algonquin group of Native Americans. In 1607, the Jamestown settlement, England's first lasting settlement in the Americas, which was made up of English people was founded in the Chesapeake Bay area.
