A Chinese emperor sent Marco Polo to find new lands, like India and Persia. He was gone for ten years. Then, when he came back, he told of many new ideas for inventions. And so, they had the idea to create a trade route (the silk route) for trading. Groups who travel on the silk route are called Caravan. Silk was popular in Europe.

Actually Marco Polo was invited by his father and uncle, Nicolo and Maffeo Polo, to join them on a second journey through the middle east. They had gone on a trading expedition and because the Silk Road joins several different countries and is basically a road through the middle east, is what they were doing on it.
