John Brown did not have an issue with state or federal rights. He did, however, have an issue if these rights promoted slavery in the border states. Like many abolitionists, Brown believed slavery was an immoral institution that needed to be wiped off the face of the planet. This mentality and that of his followers led to several anti-slavery massacres in Kansas. It, course, led to Harper's Ferry, which saw many of Brown's followers die at the hands of the Navy. Brown was also hanged after Harper's Ferry for insurrection against the powers that be.
