Because of the group of islandsÕ strategic position in the ocean, the islands of Indonesia have always been a major naval and trading center, especially with India. In the seventh century, the islands were home to the powerful Srivijaya kingdom and were influenced by both Buddhism and Hinduism. From the eighth century to the tenth century, inland Java was home to the Buddhist Sailendra dynasty and Hindu Mataram dynasty. In the thirteenth century, the Hindu Majapahit dynast ruled over eastern Java. Islam first came to Indonesia through Muslim traders at Sumatra in the thirteenth century. By the time Europeans first made contact with Indonesia in the sixteenth century, Islam was the dominant religion in the islands of Java and Sumatra.
