The US policy of containment was basically just the US policy to stop the spread of communism. Ordinarily, this took the form of stationing military forces in direct confrontation with communists: Greece, Iran, Germany, Turkey, Latin America, Korea, and Vietnam, and the general belief was that the communists (most of the time the Soviets) would back down--which the Soviets almost always did.
It made it in to the war-addicted country it is today. During the cold war a large proportion if the budget went towards the military and technological research, forging the US armed forces into one of the most technologically advanced militaries in the world. The containment policy made it possible for the US to establish a separate center of power within Europe. Organizations such as NATO played an important role in checking the spread of communism ideals in the region.
