The Whigs were an outgrowth of the Federalists party and were strongest in the Northeast. They formed in opposition to Jackson's Democratic party. As such they tended to oppose anything the Democrats pushed. The favored a national bank and tariffs to protect Northern manufacturing interests.

This question needs to be refined. The stance of all political parties change over time and therefore the question will be dependent on when. Also, there was a Whig party in the United States in the early 1800s, but there has also been a Whig party in the UK.

In its two decades of existence, the Whig Party had two of its candidates, William Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor, elected President. Both died in office. John Tyler succeeded to the Presidency after Harrison's death but was expelled from the party. Millard Fillmore, who became President after Taylor's death, was the last Whig to hold the nation's highest office.
