Many Palestinian Arabs were displaced from or fled their homes. They ended up in refugee camps in the neighboring Arab countries. Those who remained in Israel became Israeli Citizens. However, the failure of the Arab armies and the resulting statelessness left an indelible mark on the Arab World as well as the Palestinian People themselves. It defines Palestinians to this day.

Those who decided to stay in Israel are still there. They and their descendants include doctors in Israel's hospitals, judges on Israel's courts, and elected representatives in Israel's parliament. Some ran away because of Arab Propaganda. Those who decided to leave while the surrounding countries drove the Jews into the sea, and their descendants, are still waiting, many in "refugee camps", still living on home-grown propaganda, still dreaming of the day when somebody will drive the Jews into the sea and "liberate" that pathetic little patch of desert holding out as the only lonely piece of Western democracy in that part of the Earth.

Most Palestinians remained where they were before the war. The only difference was that they shifted from quasi-brutal Arab overlords (the Jordanians and Egyptians) to a quasi-brutal non-Arab overlord (Israel). Some became Israeli citizens, but most remained under military occupation in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinians who fled joined their fellows in the Diaspora or in the Refugee Camps in neighboring countries where conditions remained deplorable.

The Jewish-Arab Engagement from 1947-1949 really created two groups of Palestinians: the majority who became refugees and the minority who accepted life under Israeli control.

For the majority, roughly 720,000 Palestinian Arabs, they became refugees, subject to the jurisdiction of UNRWA. The majority of these populations ended up in UNRWA Refugee Camps in the surrounding nations, especially Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and the Arab-Occupied Palestinian Territories (after 1948). Because of the intransigence of Arab States, Palestinians have remained eternal non-citizens, often prohibited from working or improving their situation in their host countries.

For the minority, roughly 150,000 Palestinian Arabs, they became citizens of the State of Israel, subject to martial law until 1966, when they became full citizens with equal rights. While they have been subject to indirect discrimination, they have generally been able to work, support their families, live their lives, and ascend to positions of power without issue.

How many Israelis have been killed by Arabs since 1850?

It is unclear what an "Israeli" is prior to 1948 as there was no state of Israel before that point. If the term "Israeli" is also pushed back to the forerunners of the State, the Zionist Palestinian Jewry, it still only goes back to conflicts in the early 1920s. Additionally, many non-Zionist Palestinian Jews and Palestinian Arabs would also have descendants who would be Israeli citizens. Between all of the various wars and riots since the 1920s, roughly 25,000 Israelis and Palestinian Jews were killed at Arab hands (either Palestinian Arabs or Arabs from other countries). Prior to 1920s, the numbers would been incidental.

How did the Palestinian Arabs become people without a country?

In 1948, Jews didn't have a country, so they invaded Palestine, killed many Palestinians, and forced many out. The Jews then changed the name of Palestine to Israel.

How did the Arab-israeili war of 1948 affect Palestinian Arabs?

The Palestinian Arabs and Jewish Militias were already embroiled in a civil war as early as 1946 (but primarily in 1947) before the conflict widened to be an international Arab-Israeli War. Most Palestinians fled either because of fear of Jewish/Israeli retaliation, incitement by community leaders, or generally a desire to be away from the conflict. After the war, Palestinians see the events of the 1947-1949 Jewish-Arab Engagement as the Nakba (Great Catastrophe).

Is it the Arab-Palestinian Conflict? -- 1948, but became much more violent in the 1970s and 1980s, killing between 5,000-25,000 Palestinians depending on the estimates used. Is it the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict? -- 1920s, but became much more widespread in 1947 with the Jewish-Arab Engagement and the Arab-Israeli War of 1948-9. Approximately 13,000 Palestinians have died in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. Is it the Palestinian Civil War? -- 2006, but most violence took place in 2007 with approximately 600-1000 deaths. How many Arabs became refugees in the war of 1948?

In May 1948, about 1,250,000 Arabs lived in British Mandate Palestine. 670,000 Arabs fled the new state of Israel and slightly less than 65,000 were ever able to return to their homes.
