In 1862 Congress authorized construction of two railroads to link the Midwest and the West Coast. The first railroad built in the US is the Granite Railroad in Quincy, Mass. On February 28, 1827, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad became the first U.S. railroad chartered for commercial transport of passengers and freight. At first this railroad was located entirely in the state of Maryland with an original line from the port of Baltimore west to Sandy Hook.

There were many other early private or military railroads built in the various colonial areas and states, starting in 1720 with a temporary military railroad is used in the construction of the French fortress at Louisburg, Nova Scotia probably with wooden rails and horses to pull the trains.
