On Day One, Union Cavalry fought a decisive holding action that prevented the Confederates from taking the high ground South and East of town, allowing Federal forces to occupy the heights. On Day Two, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's Maine Regiment successfully defended Little Round Top against a vigorous assault by Alabama Militia. Had the assault succeeded, the South could easily have turned the Union defensive line. On Day Three, Lee threw his finest forces in a frontal attack against the center of the Union line. Pickett's Charge, as it was called, has become infamous as a glorious failure that destroyed more than sixty percent of those involved in the attack. Simultaneously, General Custer's rash cavalry charges prevented Stuart's Confederate cavalry from outflanking the Federal forces and attacking it from the rear. The failure of Pickett's Charge convinced Lee to break off the battle, abandon his northern offensive, and retreat to Virginia to conduct a vigorous defense for the remainder of the war.
