He borrowed the horse from Rev. John Larkin. It was a brown mare named Brown Beauty. The horse was never returned to Larkin and he mentions this in his will. Revere sent Congress a bill for his services and for the horse. He was paid 30 shillings. The fable of Revere comes from a Longfellow poem written in 1861 and in reality he didn't ride through the night yelling about the British coming. Longfellow wrote his poem on the eve of the civil war to remind people of the nation's history. Somehow the poem became part of history and was put into history books as fact. Revere never finished the ride, his horse was taken away and he was held by a British patrol, but thanks to Longfellow we all know who he is. He billed Congress for the ride and the cost of the horse since it was taken from him and it didn't belong to him. It was borrowed. His one big contribution was the picture on a flier after the Boston Massacre showing colonist getting shot by the British. This was pure Propaganda and was used to incite discontent between the colonist and the British troops.
Revere rode a brown mare named Brown Beauty that was borrowed from a Rev. Larken. Larken never got the horse back because it was taken by the British when they arrested Revere. Larken mentions this in his will and that is how historians know this information.
No mention of the breed is given, but the name was Brown Beauty. Revere borrowed the horse from Rev. Larkin and the horse was never returned because the British took it. Larkin mentions this in his will. Revere did send a bill to Congress for his services that night and for the cost of the horse.

Revere never got to his destination, but Prescott and Dawes also rode that night. Dawes fell off his horse leaving Prescott to finish the ride to Concord. Revere was stopped by a British patrol and his horse taken from him. The only reason we know about him is because Longfellow in 1860 wrote a poem called The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. On the eve of the civil war he was trying to remind people of American history. A young man by the name of Israel Bissel actually rode more miles than Revere or Prescott and killed a horse doing it. He is a true hero.
