It was often a Colony sharply and sometimes violently divided until the Maryland Toleration Act of 1649 explicitly demanded religious toleration. Even with such a law in place conflict between Puritans, Catholics and Anglicans was never far from the boiling point. It did not end in truth until the American Revolutionary War and the creation of the US Constitution.

It was established as a haven for England's Catholic minority but it never had a Catholic majority.

It was established as a haven for English Catholics and while they held the political power and the power of the purse they were never the majority religion. Puritans were a major power for a while after Virginia established the Church of England as the official state religion however the majority of the population from the moment it was first settled by the Ark and the Dove was always the protestant Church of England.
