women were considered as property through much of the Old Testament. Jesus later preached the equal status and worth of women. Paul continued this tradition in the very early days of Christianity. However. in the New Testament, that is believed by many to have been written in Paul's name long after his death, show that later church leaders gradually lowered the status of women towards its level before Christ's ministry. Some of the great leaders of the Christian church continued this trend of denigrating women. Women, accordingly, were:
- hold responsible of all sins and on top of these sins is original Adam sin
- deprived from inheritance
- deprived from having her own property and business
- deprived from work. When allowed to work women were deprived from having their own earnings.
- deprived from contracting or court witness
- deprived from many other human rights
