1. GB (then England and Wales) was the first nation to break from the Catholic Church and give the Protestant religion a 'homeland'. If this hadn't happened, the Catholic Church would have retained a stranglehold and the Enlightenment would have been unlikely to have happened.

2. GB was the first nation to abolish slavery. It was the superpower then and used its navel might to help put an end to it.

3. The industrial revolution was born in GB. The world as we know it began there.

4. It sacrificed its empire to stop fascism taking hold of the world.

5. British inventors invented the internet, t.v, the phone, the list goes on

6. I saw the Olympics, not bad!

Basically, the British Empire was pretty good and passed the baton to the U.S at the end of WW2 because it had no money left to keep its empire. The U.S was wary about GB and wanted to keep it weak and so let it suffer, however this was to the benefit of Stalin who FDR (and Truman) at the time thought was less harmful than British Imperialism.

At the end of the empire, GB let any country who wanted to leave do so. These countries joined 'the commonwealth' which is a loose affliation of counties who were part of the empire.

This was a far cleaner break than France, who insisted on keeping its empire but lost it anyway, losing wars in Algeria and Indochina.

This was also better than Germany's empire, which never really got off the ground due to it being taken away from it every time it lost a world war.

I suppose the biggest accomplishment was defeating the Central Powers, especially Germany, and restoring peace on the continent in 1918. The British army was bled white by the end of the war-over 1,000,000 soldiers killed and over 1,000,000 wounded. French, Russian and German losses, were even worse. These horrific losses, is the sole reason why Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in 1938, went out of his way to appease Hitler and Mussolini.
