The later part of the eighteenth century saw two revolutions which played an important role in the making of the modern world. These are the war of American Independence and French Revolution.

Achievements of the war of American Independence: -

The thirteen colonies became independent from the English. They adopted a republican form of government and called themselves the United States of America (U.S.A). The people's representatives who formed the new government in U.S.A, adopted a Bill of Rights.

Achievements of French Revolution: -

The revolutionary ideas of the French philosophers inspired the common people to assert their right to govern themselves. They started fighting for their rights, and the revolution broke out. The people's representatives declared themselves to be the National Assembly of France. The National Assembly adopted the "Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen", announcing that "men are born free and be equal in rights". The Republic of France was established, and Liberty, Fraternity and Equality became its guiding principles.

These revolutions strengthned the idea of nationalism. Countries which were divided into a number of states tried to unite themselves as one state. Countries which were under foreign domination, began to overthrow the foreign rule and establish themselves as a united nation.
