Three causes to a wide spread European effort to imperial domination, specifically in Africa, was: 1) the finding of other area's of land where raw materials were present, 2) show case power to the other European countries, because it was the 'theme' of many developing nations and 3) because of the overwhelming rivalries in Europe between countries.

Desire for cheap raw materials and expanded markets was a major reason and cause for European Imperialism. This imperialism became a more sophisticated manner to gain a military and economic advantage to the European powers amongst themselves. The imperialism resulted prior to and after the 1800's. Generally termed colonialism, it placed Great Britain as the foremost world power. As it was said, The Sun Never Sets on the British Empire. This advantage however was not set in stone as Napoleon controlled most of Europe before his ultimate defeat at Waterloo.

The ultimate motivation for most behaviors is the anticipation or hope of money. They wanted to make a profit. They hoped to find gold, and gems, and treasure, and valuable spices. Pretty much the same reason why the Europeans came to the Americas, or were trying to get to India, or China, or Japan.
