The wars started with a revolt by the Ionian city-states, expanded to include mainland Greece, which saw those Greek city-states suspend their usual warfare between them, and see off the Persian attempt ot gain control of them. When Persia gave up, they returned to fighting each other. Persia went back trying to control its empire.

The Greek city-states of Asia Minor revolted against persian rule, which the Persians put down. As the mainland cities of Eretria and Athens had aided the rebels, Persia mounted a punitive expedition against them, but were turned back at Marathon. They then decided to bring all the Greek city-states under their control and mounted an invasion (which failed). The war dragged on for 50 years until the Persians gave up and left the cities to resume their fighting each other. This fighting culminated in the 27-year Peloponnesian War which devastated Greece and made it easier fro Macedonia to take them over and use the combined strength to take over the Persian Empire.
