It essentially became a standoff - after the Greeks repelled the Persian attempt to incorporate them into the Persian empire, a peace was arranged and the Greeks went back to fighting each other. The Persian empire continued on until over-run by Macedonia.
The result of the Persian Wars was that the Persians were defeanted by the Greek city-states led by first Sparta and then Athens. After trying for fifty years to impose peace in the eastern Mediterranean, they gave up and agreed to leave them alone, and they went back to their usual fighting amongst themselves.
The Persians consolidated the rest of their empire and tried to run it in peace and prosperity, but after the Greek cities had exhausted themselves, reclaimed the Greek cities of Asia Minor. This debilitating warfare opened the way for Macedonia to dominate Greece, and use this a a platform to conquer the Persian Empire under Alexander the great.
