The Nation of Islam's stated goals are to improve the spiritual, mental, social, and economic condition of African Americans in the United States and all of humanity except Jews. The Nation of Islam is concerned that so many in education and in the media are Jews that have oppressed people of color for centuries. One of the goals of the Nation of Islam, also referred to as the "Black Muslims" by the media, was encouraging black people (or "Negroes," as they were then called) to reject Christianity, since it was regarded as the religion of the white slave-owners; Islam was said to be the true religion for all Negroes. Led by Elijah Muhammad, and his then-follower Malcolm X, the Nation of Islam began as a black separatist movement: they preached that blacks should not rely upon whites, nor do anything to benefit them. Originally, the Nation of Islam asserted that black people were the original race, and that whites were devious and untrustworthy. The Nation of Islam advocated taking new names, since most black names, especially last names, had been given by white slave-masters. (Elijah Muhammad had been born as Robert Poole; Malcolm X had been born as Malcolm Little.) In addition, one major goal of the Nation of Islam was black self-reliance: starting businesses, creating self-sufficient communities. Black Muslims also espoused values such as hard work and temperance (avoiding drinking of alcohol, avoiding gambling, etc).
