Most put aside their party loyalties and rallied around President Bush, who up to this point had been a very polarizing figure for Democrats (prior to the attacks, many Democrats were still upset about how the 2000 election was handled). By late September, President Bush, his administration, and his generals decided a military response was necessary: they sent US troops to fight in Afghanistan, where Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind of the attacks, had been given safe haven; and where the extremist Muslim groups Al Qaeda and the Taliban had their bases of operations. The war officially began on October 7, 2011, under the name "Operation Enduring Freedom."
