Simon Cameron was President Lincoln's first secretary of war. Lincoln became upset with Cameron when in early 1862, he distributed a report that urged the government to arm former slaves. Lincoln sent him to Russia as the US ambassador. Lincoln then appointed Edwin Stanton as the new secretary of of war.
Chase ran for the Republican nomination in both 1860 and 1864. Both times he was defeated by Abraham Lincoln, whom he served under as Secretary of the Treasury from 1861-1864, and who appointed him Chief Justice in 1864.

Despite his ambitions, Chase was ultimately unsuccessful in his bid for the presidency in 1864, as Lincoln secured the Republican nomination and was reelected.
