The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990 prompted the Gulf War, but this event was made possible by the end of the Cold War in 1989. The basis for the Iraqi annexation of Kuwait goes back to the end of World War 1, when Kuwait was not included as a part of Iraq.

Saddam spent a lot of money funding the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988), however he didn't have as much as he spent. He borrowed a lot of money from the Kuwaiti's and the Saudi's.

Once the war was over, the Kuwaiti's wanted their money back, however Saddam was now broke.

When the Kuwaiti's realised they weren't going to get their money back, they started slant-drilling under the border - taking Iraqi oil.

This triggered Saddam to invade Kuwait and the Gulf War started.
