Probably the most profound effect that Native Americans had on WWII was in the Pacific theater. It was here that the code talkers were introduced. The Japanese never broke any code that the code talkers used. Matter of fact, during the cold war, a little known bit of history is that the Soviet Union went thru many efforts to procure the languages that were used by our code talkers and taught it to their GRU operatives. This way if we tried to do that to them, they could counter it. Also one of the Marines that raised the flag at Iowa Jima was Ira Hayes.

∙ 13y agoNative American Indians served in the Armed Forces. The Navajo Tribe had young men who became "code talkers". They used the Navajo language to send code so the Japanese could not crack the code.
Indians from India served in the Armed Forces for His Majesty King George of Britain. They had to help with supplying China troops too. Airmen flew supplies over the high mountains from India to China. They did a lot more than that to keep the Japanese at bay.

First Nations soldiers served in the Canadian military during both wars. One of Canada's most decorated soldiers, and member of the legendary Devil's Brigade was Tommy Prince an Ojibwa from Manitoba. 200 natives died serving Canada during the conflict. They served on the front lines as ordinary foot soldiers, snipers, reconnaissance and other roles.

∙ 11y agoCode talkers. I believe the Navajo were selected because of their language was not translated into written form. I seem to remember that they were highly decorated for their service in the South Pacific.
