Many restrictions on women disappeared during the war. It became acceptable for young, employed, single middle-class women to have their own apartments, to go out without chaperones, and to smoke in public. During the war, women were also viewed as important. Images of women on posters and postcards were to provide inspiration for the men in battle. The belief was that when a man saw the image of a woman he would be reminded of what he was fighting to protect. But he would also get a sense of comfort thinking about his loved one at home.Society also wanted women to focus on having children. With so many people dying there would be a population decline. In order to keep the population numbers up, women and men were asked to reproduce.During the war there were many things that women were asked to do: go to work, volunteer, have kids.

Before the outbreak of World War I in 1914, a woman's role in the workplace was quite restricted, jobs for women consisted mainly of domestic labor, nursing, teaching, and agriculture if their family owned a small holding. Although some women were employed in factories they performed mainly menial and repetitive tasks and were paid a small percentage of what their male counterparts earned. Canadian women played a very important role in Canada's involvement in World War I.

When the war broke out, it quickly became apparent that many men would have to leave their homes to go fight. In order to keep Canada's economy rolling, the women were left to fill in the gaps and take up positions and jobs that they had previously never done. Women had worked in the industrial units during the war. Though attitudes towards working women changed. Many people, for example, thought that working outside the home should be provisional in a women's life. They believed that women should give up their jobs when they get married so that they could look after the house and start a family.

Married women who had jobs had to resign, but married men could continue working.

The post-war recession created a shortage of job opportunities for the women who wanted or needed to work to raise their family. Women were hassled to give up their jobs to make room for the men who refused to go overseas. Some employers laid off women or deducted some of their wages

Because of Robert Borden, lots of women earned the right to vote, so therefore politicians started paying attention to "women's issues", such as health and childcare. But women soon began to recognize that by means of their powers as electorates to convince male politicians to support their cause was the fastest way to achieve equality. As a result, some women began to enter the world of politics.
