Is that zero ohms measured in circuit or out of circuit? To get an accurate reading it needs to be out of circuit. Next, which scale did you use on the meter? If you're measuring on the 5k ohm scale, you won't get much useful information about your pickup coil or high voltage coil. On the other hand, if you're getting zero ohms and you're on the right scale, the coil is probably shorted internally.

buy the new module. buy a manual for your car. buy needed tools. figure it out and replace it. OR take it to a shop. OR junk the car, cause it's probably not worth replacing that broken module.

Why would your check engine light come on after replacing the water pump on my 96' Chevy Lumina?

Replacing the water pump will not cause the check engine light to come on. Either it is a coincidence or you have accidentally disconnected a wire or damaged a sensor somehow.
