I am having that very same problem with my 92 grand am se and they tell me it is the converter clutch solenoid not sure yet it is being looked at so I will reply when I know if that was the problem. Check and replace vacuum hoses. The larger hose from the oil separator (the black box by the Power Steering pump) to the manifold with the sensor in it may be the problem. Can cause a fast idle, surging when you take your foot off the accelerator, check engine light may go on and off, code check will show improper idle- possible IAC (idle air control). A bad clutch solenoid normally shows up by the engine dying when stopping.
There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.
