The transmission needs repair. The electronic control system causes the transmission to stay in 2nd gear when it detects a problem, such as slipping in 3rd gear or overdrive. This allows the car to be driven in an emergency.
drain and refill the gearbox it has an overdrive relay.Answer # 2:NO! no fuses for the transmission, but there is an overdrive relay. The transmission overdrive relay is locate behind the fuse box.The fuse box is located behind the ashtray. To replace it:Remove the ashtrayAfter you remove the ashtry, pull the cigarrete lighter out, pull the cover of the lighter, remove two Philips screws and remove the box above the ashtray.the overdrive relay will be the one on the second row,far right side
The band that controls second and fourth gear has failed. Usually about a $400 repair at a transmission shop.
Answer IGNORE THE PREVIOUS ANSWER!!!!! YES, YOU MUST LEAVE THE OVERDRIVE IN THE ON POSITION IN YOUR CAR AND THIS IS WHY: The transmission comes with a total of 4 gears including the Overdrive. Releasing the overdrive only restricts the transmission to a 3 gear transmission and therefore does not give you extra power by turning it on (contrary to popular belief). The manufacture reccomends leaving the Overdrive ON for best fuel econimy and performance. Downshifting to second gear again restricts the transmission to a 2 gear transmission (and is therefore not only 2nd gear) and again downshifting to 1st gear restricts the transmission to only one gear or 1st gear. the previous answer is wrong. L8R. - AHEARS.Not if you want to get the best life out of the engine and transmission. The transmission is set up to shift into overdrive whenever possible, to maximize the E.P.A. fuel ratings. However, this results in the engine revolutions per minute being too low for most driving conditions, which leads to carbon deposits in the cylinders, and excessive unburned fuel having to be processed by the environmental controls system. In city, on in hilly terrain, turn the overdrive off. Cruising on the freeway, turn it on.
Depending on the vechicle it could be complex or simple. For example on my 85 Trooper the cause for it not shifing into overdrive was a burnt out lightblub on the transmission dash board. Strange as it might seem turns out Isuzu designed the overdrive so that it wouldn't work if the light went out! The cost to fix this was about 39 bucks as I recall however I DID have one shop tell me I needed a whole new Transmission!! That would have cost thousands had I taken their advice. Whoever you get to check it out make sure you get a second opinion if it sounds like it will cost a lot.
No, you would have cleaned it already.
Go to JCWhitney.com, they sell tops starting at $96. Just do some investigating before doing it yourself, the first time I did it , it took me two tries, the second car I did it on it was much easier.
Check Ignition switch. Does your speedo or tach work? If not it's the ignition switch. The transmission needs 12volts to operate and if the ignition switch is not working right you will not have first gear or overdrive, the suburban will try to take off in second and seems like your tranny is slipping!
your overdrive unit is probably shot. that is the fourth gear or drive as you call it. they have had lots of trouble with all overdrive automatics in the states. your opel is a GM design.
AnswerSince the transmission is automatic, it will "automatically" know when to go into, and out of, overdrive. So most of the time you don't even have to think about it. There are only a couple of times when you'd want to turn off overdrive. One is when you're descending a long, steep hill, and you'd want to put the transmission is second or third to keep your speed under control especially when towing a load. The other time is when the transmission is hunting. "Hunting" is when the transmission is searching for the proper gear to be in. Under certain conditions, like on some rolling hills, or in city traffic between 30 and 40 miles per hour, the transmission can be right on the edge between high gear and overdrive. And as a result, it keeps shifting back and forth between them. That's hunting. While this is not great for the transmission, it's more of just an annoyance. So if you notice that your transmission is hunting a lot, and it bothers you, you may want to temporarily turn off the overdrive. Just make sure you remember to turn it back on, so you don't drive around with the overdrive off and use way more fuel.On most vehicles of this type, it is recommended in the Owner's Manual to turn off overdrive anytime you are towing a trailer.
The transmission computer has detected a malfunction and switched to limp in mode. You need to have it checked for codes to see if you have an electrical or mechanical problem.
The overdrive. Try driving it with the overdrive off.
You need a new transmision, your gears are shot.
