I have the same problem; so far the problem seems to be in the transmission. Maybe the gear that drives the speedometer gear, won't know without taking transmission apart.
Your vehicle speed sensor. I Believe it is located near your transmission under the car. fairly easy to replace
I have had this experience more then once. Your speed sensor is the cause. The transmission changes gear based on the info from this sensor. When defective it doesn't register the speed correctly. To check this, watch your speedometer as you drive. if it is dipping low while you are accelerating then the sensor is bad. You need to have the transmission computer checked for codes. When the computer detects a problem it sets a code and locks the trans in 2nd gear. The output speed sensor mentioned above could be one of dozens of causes.

I have a 96 that does this. Still tring to figure it out. I just went to a garage and spent 203.00 dollars on a part and labor this part was the speed senser and this did not fix it. im out of money this week, so ill come back and let you know what it was. idk if I'm late here but i had the same problem i am an automotive technician and the problem is that there is a gear inside the transmission on the trans axle that's plastic and it falls off or breaks off one easy way to test this is to take the speed sensor out and then remove the gear from the top of the transmission and take a drill and spin it and see if your speedometer registers. if it does then the problem is the gear inside the transmission. I've changed mine and then it worked!
pickup speedometer does not register from a cold start. Shifting lurches and then all evens out after about 30 mph
it coulld have a blown fuse wich operates the instrument cluster
Register two times the async input. Use it in your sync system
Hey Stormmin===It depends on what kind of car and what year. If it is an electric speedo, it can be the speed sensor or in the head. If it is a manual it is in the head. GoodluckJoe
If it's a cable driven speedo setup, the speed sensor head in the transmission, the gauge in the dash, or the cable connecting the two could be broken/breaking. If it's an electrical speedo, then maybe it's just a loose wire connection somewhere.
Could be a loose ground wire
One of your wheel sensors are shot or your vss. Go to a repair shop and have them read the codes to see which one it is. The wheel sensors are cheap and easy to replace!
