There have been various human rights movements, right down through the history of mankind. They have not always been called 'human rights' movements, but records of the human race and cultures and societies show that there has always been the dominant and the oppressed, the dominant failing to acknowledge the respect and dignity and rights of fellow man.

The oppressed have either accepted their fate, or risen up in revolt in some way or other. In addition there have been activists who, whilst not themselves oppressed, have seen the injustice and come to the aid of those denied their human rights.

So human rights started with the arrival of humans. That seems to go back a very long time!

The United States Bill of Rights was first adopted in 1791. That initial bill excluded the crucial amendments (changes) that gave rights to many more groups of people.

Edit: There were many other examples of 'human rights' before 1791... it's a pretty vague concept to nail down. Roman citizens had certain rights over 2,000 years ago for example. The Code of Hammurabi was over 3,500 years ago.
