The Triple Entente won World War 1, though by the end Russia had dropped out and Italy and the US had joined. The main reason for their victory is generally agreed to be their superior production capabilities. Germany and Austria-Hungary's industries simply couldn't keep up with such a long, protracted war.
One obstacle to German unification was that Austria did not want a powerful neighbor. Religion was another obstacle, as well as individuals not wanting to lose their power.

Germany spent so much time and materiel trying to keep Italy from losing, that it made them lose battles, if not the War, itself. Italy's army was commanded by rich people and the aristocracy who mostly knew little about making war. Italy miserably failed to supply Germany's army in North Africa to the point that Germany's soldiers were near starvation, and they ran out of ammunition several times.
