Territorial expansion of the British East India Company started in 1757, with the Battle of Plassey. Over the next hundred years, the company annexed various Indian kingdoms. During this period, it was East India Company, and not the British crown, which administered annexed territories. Most of the Company's army consisted of Indian recruits, with British officers. In 1857, there was a rebellion of the Indian recruits. It lasted for about 2 years and was finally quelled. The effect of this rebellion was that British crown 'took over' from the East India Company - and became sovereign. At this time, around two-third of the Indian territory was held by British. Remaining one-third, consisting of around 500 kingdomes and principalities, remained nominally independent - but under British protection. After this, there was no further territorial expansion of British.
Well, based on what it says on this certain site, the first Europeans arrived in India in 1498. It was Vasco Da Gama who arrived there first. Then they traded in all of India for a long time. There was a lot of competition for trade among the English, French, Dutch, and Portugese. The Brtish took over in 1858-1918, which was their first colonial rule and then their second colonial rule was from 1919- 1947. After a lot of resistance and rebelions from the natives of India, the Indians gained independence on August 15th 1947. When the British left India, they broke it up into several different nations our of which emerged Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iraq, and many other nations. Hope this was helpful.Jaya Tanwani
