Whenever the shocks are deficient... e.g., leaking oil, damaged, excessively hot after driving.
Most trailers are semi trailers. You're probably asking the difference between a semi trailer and a full trailer. A semi trailer is not wholly self supporting, and weight is distributed both the trailer axles, and to the tow vehicle. A full trailer supports its own weight fully.
You call it a semi because it pulls a semi trailer.A semi is a type of trailer. A semi-trailer, as opposed to a full trailer, means it only has axles at the rear of the trailer and a full trailer has axles at the front and rear of the trailer. We call these in the UK "drags", as in wagon and drag, where the wagon that pulls the drag can carry a load on its own, whereas the semi-trailer truck, or tractor unit cannot carry anything without a trailer.
Trailer is way more bigger than a semi-trailer. Common misconception between a trailer and a semi-trailer. Technically, a trailer has wheels in front and rear and is hitched to a pulling vehicle (car, truck, etc.) A semi- trailer only has wheels in the rear and is hitched to a pulling vehicle (car, truck, etc.)

Semi or Tractor Trailer-semi.
The word semi means half, or part. The tractor and trailer are two parts, hence semi truck and or trailer.
An articulated lorry is a truck and trailer - a combination involving a tractor unit and a semi-trailer, known in the United States as a semi-trailer truck.
There really isn't a set interval for this. How fast your shocks wear is going to depend on the quality of the shocks you use, and what you do with your truck. If you use your truck for sitework and drive on a lot of access roads, logging trails, and the like, you'll work your shocks more than a typical highway driver would. Basically, when the time comes to change them, you're going to feel it. Even if you have air ride on all axles, you'll feel it. Of course, if you actually do your pre-trip (as so many steering wheel holders out here neglect to do), you'll look for obvious signs.. physical damage, fluid leakage, decompression of the shocks.
There is no minimum weight.
A semi trailer is any trailer which doesn't fully support its own weight. That's the ver batim definition. A boat trailer for private use is not regulated the way a commercial use trailer is.
