Slavery has existed from ancient times in almost every area of the world, and classically included the Hebrew captivity in Egypt. It was widely used up to the time of the worldwide European colonies. The first ship bringing African slaves to America docked in Jamestown in 1619. From then on more ships came periodically. Pennsylvania and Massachusetts had less slavery than other states as they were theoretically opposed to it in practice (religious states). New York outlawed slavery in 1827. On September 22, 1862 Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves in the Southern States onlyby means of an executive order called the Emancipation Proclamation. This was really a political ploy to weaken the South because Lincoln's North was in the middle of the Civil War. However, on December 18, 1865 the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution was passed freeing the slaves throughout the US.
