Hannibal, one of the greatest generals in history, was a Carthaginian. Carthage is in what is now Tunisia & Algeria. By a roundabout route he invades what is now Italy, from Spain, through southern France & then crosses the Alps, elephants and all ! Great battles ensue, Lake Trasieme most notably Cannae. In due course he is defeated in North Africa by the Roman general Scipio Africanus.
Hannibal was a Carthaginian general who invaded Italy during the Second Punic War. He defeated the Romans several times during the 15 years he was in Italy, but each time the Romans raised another army from its citizens and allies. Hannibal's strategy was to detach the allies from Rome to counter this, with limited success. However he still roamed around Italy as he pleased, but without adequate seige engines was unable to take Rome. Rome eventally countered by invading North Africa to threaten Carthage, and Hannibal's army was withdrawn to defend the home city.
