The Battle of Chancellorsville was fought at the crossroads of the Orange Turnpike and Ely's Ford Road and the area around there, about ten miles west of Fredricksburg. It is in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

The name Chancellorsville is misleading, as there was no town there. It was actually an inn and tavern built by a George Chancellor, and it was a private residence at the time of the battle.

The Battle of Chancellorsville 1-4 May 1863, took place in the area between Wilderness Tavern and Fredericksburg Virginia. Today the area is bisected by Interstate 95 and Virginia Route 3. Route 3 is built on the foundations of the Old Plank Road, where most of the fighting took place. There is a National Historical Park on the western end of the original battlefield, Fredericksburg Spotsylvania Military Park. The battlefield is about 50 miles SSW of Washington DC and 50 miles north of Richmond Virginia.
