The "Cherokee" were only one of 5 tribes involved in the Trail of Tears. Most note them as they were the last moved and had the highest Death Rate of all the tribes moved. The related question (noted below) gives better detail of what, where, and when as there is no 'place' per se.

The "Trail of Tears" is not a single geographic path, but an overall term for the forcible relocation of Native American tribes (along many different routes) from the southeastern US to the "Indian Lands" of the Plains. Several tribes were affected, including the Cherokees to whom the term was first applied. Parts of the routes were by boat and part on foot or in wagons.

When Andrew Jackson was president, in order to accommodate westward expansion, all Cherokee Indians east of the Mississippi river were to be relocated to areas west of the river. The Trail of Tears, as the march was called, started just outside of Chattanooga, TN and ended in Florence AL where the Indians were loaded aboard boats for the trip farther west. The march was called the "Trail of Tears" due to the number of deaths along the way. Many of these deaths were caused by the cold conditions, the distance traveled, and sickness among the tribes.

As a Harley rider, I have had the privilege of riding the "Trail of Tears" memorial ride on several occasions. We leave Chattanooga and ride to Florence along much of the same path as the Cherokee were forced to march.

It was actually a Choctaw Tribesman that called the 14 trails the "Trail of Tears," long before the Cherokee were moved (see related question). While there may be a single memorial trail today with that definition, that was not true beforehand.
