Originally Rhode Island was found nad named by a dutch explorer named Adrian Block. He called it red island because of the clay on the beahces but he said this with an accent and when the british came it turned into Rhode Island.

It was also a golden opportunity to empty the prison system of debtors and petty crooks.
The advantage and perhaps the curse of bringing in settlers from the New World was that they were individuals with property, servants, slaves and hard currency who had lived as free men ant therefore along with their other baggage they brought opinions and ideas of what could and should be the role of government and what could and should be the relationship between the Citizen and the State. Williams also believed it was wrong for settlers to take land away from the natives. The ideas of Roger Williams caused him in 1635 to be banished by Massachusett's leaders. In 1636, he fled to the south and founded Rhode Island.
