Grand Prix is French for Big Prize and is the name given to a Formula One motor race (e.g. 2012 British Grand Prix). There are roughly twenty Grands Prix (and yes, that is how to spell the plural) each held in a different country around the world.
The winner of the Formula Drivers' Championship and Constructors' Championship are worked out on a points system depending on the results at all the Grands Prix that have taken place, and yearly champions are announced. In 2011, these were Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing.
Usually a country will host a Grand Prix (or GP) once every year. The places which have hosted the most GPs since F1 started in 1950 are Britain, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Monaco and France (although France doesn't do one any more).
'Grand Prix' is also what the BBC coverage of Formula One used to be called.
