Looking up underneath the dash at the top of the brake pedal assembly there is a cylindrical (white) switch. Its a pain to get to, but the master cylinder push rod activates it, so this will be loose when you remove the switch. The part is about $15 from your local auto store.
Auto parts store (auto zone etc.) Dealer?
I work in the auto parts business and it is located under the brake pedal.
yes. many late model automatics require you to have the brakes on, before shifting into gear..... the auto uses the brake switch to "unlock" the the shifter when the brakes are on... ergo.... switch is faulty, then the auto won't "unlock"
it's probably the brake light switch. in front of the brake padle. have you check the brake switch. their not very expensive. at auto zone
I have a 4 cylinder Chevy cavalier and it holds 5 quarts . Ask at the auto parts place, maybe they can tell you for sure.
the brake switch is broken. The switch is located above the brake pedal. It costs about $9 to $15 at local auto part store but the quality is not as good as the OEM. I recommend an OEM switch from the dealer. It costs double but it is better made.
Possibly a problem with the brake light switch It is linked to the gear selector If the switch is faulty you cannot select gears Make sure the brake lights are working
The emergency brake must be on for the top to open. If the brake light on the dash does not come on with the emergency brake on then you will need to replace the switch on the emergency brake.

I think it is next to the brake pedal at the top. When you press on brake the switch button comes out putting the elect to the light bulb. May just need another brake light switch at an auto store. look up under dash to the top of brake pedal arm you should see switch next to steering col-um .
The 1976 Chevrolet C 10 ignition switch cylinder instructions can be found at most Chevrolet dealerships. The instructions can also be obtained from most auto-parts stores.
