It will be round with approximately the diameter of a half dollar. Can be metal or plastic. Plugs in with a 3 blade type connector. Is located: UNDERNEATH THE INSTRUMENT PANEL, NEAR THE LEFT HAND COWL SIDE TRIM PANEL.
The flasher unit on the Ford Escort is located on the 1996 model under the steering wheel and directly under the indicator switch. Take the panel off the underside of the steering column, and the flasher unit is under the indicator switch. It looks like a black square box; just pull out.

The flasher for the 1997 xh falcon is located to the left of the steering column. When you remove the cover to access the fuse box on the right of the steering column the flasher will be visible on the left. ie opposite the in car fuses.
On my '93 ford escort 1.9L, it is located under the dash, behind the heater control assembly.
