Where is the thermostat housing on a 1996 Saturn SL2?
Located below the A/C compressor, it has the lower radiator hose attached to it and is held on by (2) 10mm bolts. You can change it with the A/C compressor installed, but will find it easier with the A/C compressor loose and out of the way.
Follow the top radiator hose to the engine, what that mounts to is the thermostat housing, remove this and there is your thermostat. * ** *** **** ***** Actually, on my 1997 SL2, the thermostat is on the bottom radiator hose. The thermostat AND HOUSING will cost about $15 at O'reilly auto parts, and may cost a little more or less at other auto parts retailers. Note that the Saturn thermostat is cast into the thermostat housing, so it's a little different than other vehicles that you may have encountered. Labor to replace the thermostat may vary, depending on the shop and local rates.
The thermostat is located right on the front of the engine block. It is not a normal thermostat like you see in most vehicles. It is actually the flange that the lower radiator hose slips on to.
