It is located on the drivers side of the engine, just in front of but slighly below the distributor cap. You will have to remove the entire air cleaner, the inlet hose and disconnect the coil wire so you can access the thermostat housing. Once that is done, you'll need to remove the wire that connects to the sensor in the thermostat housing. Then just tie all the wires up so they are out of your way. Two bolts hold the housing to the engine, remove those and pop it off to get to the thermostat. The bottom bolt is a real pain to get to, I foung that an offset boxend wrench works the best. Just remember to get a new gasket when its time to put it back together.

On your 1994 MERCURY TRACER, the THERMOSTAT is: UNDER HOOD, DRIVER SIDE, UPPER ENGINE AREA, ENGINE END OF UPPER RADIATOR HOSE, MOUNTED IN COOLANT OUTLET HOUSING. The upper radiator hose will lead you to the thermostat housing as described above. It is much easier to access if you remove the distributor which sits above the thermostat. Mark your plug wires if you unplug them.
