Probably in a removable housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose
follow your top radiator hose to intake,its inside tne thermostat cover.
From what my mechanic tells me, it is under the manifold. No, form my eperience (replacing that sucker) the thermostat on the 1996 Nissan quest is on the left side of the engine, where your drive belts are located. in order to access it first you have to take off your serpentine belts. then you have to take off the upper and lower timing belt covers. the thermostat housing is directly above and slightly behind the water pump.
The thermostat is located on the left side of the engine. Look past the drive belt pulley and towards the bottom and you will see the thermostat housing and two hoses coming out of it.

I have Nissan Serena japan import, right hand drive . Engine size is 1997 diesel automatic, 8 seat. The thermostat is under the driver seat. Lift the driver seat and you you will see the thick hose water coming from the engine and goes to the radiator, lower part. Where the pipe connects the engine there is the thermostat. It has 3 screws, remove them and remove the metal part and the thermostat is attached to the hole. Regards. GAL
locate the top hose on the radiator drive side follow it back to thermostat housing it's were the clamp is at on the end of the hose.
