For the automatic transmission only, the dipstick for the Transmission Fluid is located on the driver side of the engine near the power brake booster. It is low in the engine bay so you may get your arm/hand dirty when checking the fluid level. Follow the proceedure in your manual to get an accurate reading.
I've owned 3 of these cars with the auto trans & have found that they require aggressive maintenance to prevent potential problems. The CD4E transmission is known to have overheating & wear issues. I perform a 4 quart drain & fill with every other oil change to keep the fluid clean & the tranny in top shape. Each of my cars has well over 100k miles without serious problems.
Answertransmission fluid is located in the transmissionI have a 1998 Mercury Mystique LS automatic w/ a 2.5 liter V6 and it takes Mercon V transmission fluid. I'm not certain if it is the same for you, you should probably consult your owners manual.

According to a transmission mechanic I talked to some cars keep most of the fluid in the transmission. The fluid has to be pumped out and new pumped in at same time. Not sure if this was baloney or the truth since he was trying to sell his $149 transmission fluid flush.
On a 2001 Mercury Sable : The automatic transaxle ( transmission ) fluid level dipstick is near the firewall , in the area of the brake fluid reservoir , in the engine compartment
The 2004 Mercury Mountaineer does not have an automatic transmission fluid dipstick . I know that the 2002 and newer Ford Explorer four door versions do not have a dipstick for the automatic transmission fluid level .
On a 1998 Mercury Mountaineer : Using a funnel , add the automatic transmission fluid through the automatic transmission fluid dipstick tube . It is located near the firewall , just to the right side ( passenger side ) of the engine , where the transmission is bolted to the rear of the engine . ( the type of transmission fluid to use should be engraved into the dipstick )
On a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis : The automatic transmission fluid level dipstick is in the engine compartment , near the firewall , towards the passenger side of the engine
