There are two engine coolant temperature sensors. One drives the gauge or warning light on the instrument panel generally referred to as the sending unit. The other is used by the computer to determine engine coolant temperature and adjust the fuel/air mixture accordingly; this is generally referred to as the sensor. The two are easily distinguished, since the sending unit for the temperature guage has only one wire going to it, while the unit that provides information to the computer has two or three wires to it. On V6 engines, the sending unit for the gauge is located on the front lower part of the intake manifold, near the thermostat housing. - Mazda Pickups Service Manual
