Slavery can be found in different forms around the world today, such as forced labor, human trafficking, and debt bondage. It can occur in industries like agriculture, construction, domestic work, and the sex trade. Countries with weak legal protections, conflict zones, and areas with high levels of poverty are often more susceptible to slavery.

Anti-slavery advocates of 1861 may have invoked Joel Barlow because of his strong anti-slavery views and his efforts to work towards the abolition of slavery in early American society.
