This is where a division commander is supposed to be during combat, and claiming that Pickett cowardly stayed towards the rear is a completely illegitimate claim. Testimony to how close to the fighting Pickett was can be demonstrated in that when Stannard's Vermont brigade counterattacked the Confederate flank at the close of the charge, Pickett's observation position was overrun by skirmishers just minutes after he left.
