If you are English or French, eastern front was in France against the Germans

If you are German, eastern front was in Russia against Russia.

Specifically, the terms are mainly associated with World War II, and are defined from the point of view of Germany: the "western front" was the one where the Germans were mainly fighting French, British, and American forces, and the "eastern front" was the one where they were mainly fighting Soviet forces.
